What?

Explorer Post 427 was established in 2019 to provide high school students with education in emergency management practices and other career readiness skills. Students will have the opportunity to receive specialized training, participate in volunteer activities, and attend significant events such as the World Police and Fire Games and the Transplant Games. Additionally, they may also have the chance to earn scholarships through the Alabama Association of Emergency Managers.

Why?

We established this explorer post to continue preparing the next generation to be caretakers of the public. At Jefferson County Emergency Management, we are deeply committed to every aspect of the community. However, we also understand that we won't be here forever. By preparing the next generation to care for and prepare the community as passionately as we do, we can ensure that our work continues to improve the lives of our fellow neighbors.

Who?

High school students aged 14-18 with a minimum 2.5 GPA and an interest in public safety or a related field should participate in the program. However, students with other interests can also benefit from this program, as there are partnerships with different sectors that may relate to public health, public administration, government relations, communications, and physical sciences. Emergency management is not a one-size-fits-all profession and collaborates with the whole community. This program aims to better prepare students, regardless of their interests.

Where?

Most meetings will be held at our office located at 709 19th St N, Birmingham, AL 35203.  If we host a meeting away from our office, that information will be posted on our social media accounts (@JeffCoALema).

It's worth noting that there is an annual explorer convention hosted by the Boy Scouts of America, which we would like to attend as a post. If there are other conferences that may benefit the Explorer post, we are open to exploring those opportunities as well.

When?

Meetings are scheduled to occur twice a month on the second and fourth Thursday from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Please note that certain meetings, like the Magic City Classic and specific training sessions, may not adhere to this schedule, but advance notice will be provided.
